Hyderabad: Telangana government is likely to consider a hike in the ex gratia given to families of farmers who commit suicides. This issue would be discussed at the cabinet meeting at Secretariat on Saturday.

The government is contemplating hiking the ex gratia as it threatens to assume high priority during the monsoon session of the State Assembly scheduled to begin from September 23.

The opposition parties have already started demanding a relook on the amount of ex gratia, which was fixed at Rs 1 lakh during the regime of Y S Rajashekara Reddy in the undivided Andhra Pradesh.

In the post-bifurcation scenario, Andhra Pradesh has already hiked the ex gratia to Rs 5 lakh and opposition parties in Telangana quoting the AP initiative are mounting pressure on the TRS government to implement the same in Telangana.

When a State with financial woes could do so, why can’t a surplus State do so is what the opposition parties argument. Caught in a dilemma, the government is also seriously thinking about issue.

However, some in the government are of the opinion that hiking of ex gratia amount might encourage farmers to resort to the extreme step of committing suicides.The Cabinet will also discuss about the monsoon session of Telangana Legislature and government strategies to counter the Opposition parties.

Congress and TDP already declared that they would be cornering the ruling party on a host of issues like spurt in farmers’ suicides, change of design of irrigation projects like Pranahita-Chevella. Rao is likely to assign responsibilities to ministers on each issue so that they can effectively respond and refute allegations from opposition members.

Also listed on the agenda is discussion about the new irrigation policy based on re-engineering of projects, which the Telangana government claims to have taken up to suit the needs of the State. According to sources, he is likely to announce the new irrigation policy in the coming monsoon session. KCR is also likely to brief the cabinet about his visit to China and the talks he had with various industrialists during his 10 day visit.
