Hyderabad: Cyberabad Police Commissioner C V Anand has called upon the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) authorities and private engineering college managements to act on ragging cases without taking prestige of the institution into the consideration.

Addressing the private engineering college managements on anti ragging seminar - Review on Implementation of Anti-Ragging Measures in Educational Institutions - organised by the Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) at JNTU-Hyderabad on Saturday, Anand said that the prestige of the university or the colleges had become a hindrance for filing cases against ragging.

“While acting on the ragging case in the Nalsar University, the authorities had pressurised that prestige of the university would get a beating. The university and college managements have to come out of this mindset,” he added. The commissioner urged the college managements to take exemplary disciplinary action against the students who indulge in ragging.

“This will send a message to other students. But unfortunately this is not happening in universities or colleges,” he opined.Anand stated that the police personnel did not like to enter the educational institutions as it would send wrong message among the students. However, on the last resort the police would enter the campus, he said.

He further added that the college managements had to take responsibility for curbing ragging menace in buses by installing CCTV cameras or by any other measure. The top cop doubted whether the engineering institutions had a functional anti-ragging committee as mandated by University Grants Commission and Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad police commissioner M Mahender Reddy said college managements had to gather evidence on ragging to nail the students who indulge in the act. He asked the managements to familarise the students with the consequences of ragging. “If the colleges fail to act, the university should act on the ragging issues. If small incidents are curbed, it will not lead to bigger issues,” he said.

Reddy further said his personnel would react to any sort of incidents within a few minutes and advised the students to download Hawk eye app to register complaint with the police.TSCHE Chairman Prof T Papi Reddy said the college managements have to depute two senior faculty members in the hostels to curb ragging menace during night hours.
