Hyderabad: Despite all the talk of eco-friendly Ganeshas and concerted efforts by the Greens to popularise the concept, denizens in the city have still not taken the Green path if one were to go by the results of the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB).

About 60,000 idols were immersed till Tuesday, mostly made of Plaster of Paris. The TSPCB has found that there was an increase of pollution level in the Hussainsagar Lake after the Ganesh immersion.

Samples collected from six locations before September 14 and during the immersion period between September 18 and September 28 showed that Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) increased considerably at all locations.

BOD is a measure of the quantity of oxygen used by microorganisms in the oxidation of organic matter. It is a time-tested method to measure pollutant organic material in water.

Samples are collected and analyzed as per the guidelines set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for various physiochemical parameters, heavy metals and sediments.

As per the preliminary analysis reports received as on Tuesday, the BOD values increased from 34 to 57 mg/l at platform No 1, 16 to 24 mg/l at Necklace Road, 28 to 36 mg/l at Lepakshi Handicrafts and 20 to 28 mg/l at NTR Park.
