Hyderabad: In a bid to promote and encourage use of Khadi among people, Indian national flag made of Khadi would be unveiled on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on Friday (October 2).

The event being conducted by an organisation called ETHICS (Encouraging Towards Harmony of Incredible India’s Culture and System) in coordination with Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports,

National Service Scheme, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Sports Authority of India and an NGO Avasyu Foundation, will display 4.7 kilometres length flag from people’s plaza Necklace Road to Marriot Hotel on Tank Bund.

About 30 Sircilla (Karimnagar) Khadi weavers have weaved the national flag in eight days at a cost of Rs 3 lakh.Union Minister for Labour and Employment Bandaru Dattatreya and other Central Ministers would participate in the event.

About 5,000 students from degree and engineering colleges, schools, NSS and others would be taking part in the programme. Also, cultural programmes and video presentations promoting Khadi were being arranged as part of the event.

Addressing the media at Press Club in Somajiguda on Wednesday, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan vice-chairman Perala Shekhar Rao said that they intend to send the message-‘Khadi for nation, Khadi for fashion’ to the people through the event.

“This will be a biggest flag so far to be unveiled and it will be recorded as the biggest flag by Asian Book of Records,” he added. Rao said that promoting Khadi clothes would benefit rural Khadi weavers and also help in generating employment for the youth.
