House adjourned till Monday

Hyderabad: The state assembly on Thursday created a record of sorts when it adjourned for the day within 10 minutes of starting the proceedings.

Raising the issue of farmers’ suicides in unison, the opposition parties demanded the government to make a categorical statement on the issue of waiving loans in one go.

While the Congress members trooped into the well of the House, TDP, BJP and Left-wing parties stood in their seats displaying banners and placards with some slogans holding the government responsible for farmers’ suicides.

Amidst the pandemonium, Speaker S Madhusudhana Chary took up the question hour observing that the issue was discussed at length for two days while another important discussion on power was listed for the day and sought members’ cooperation.

But as the opposition members continued with their protest, the Speaker asked R&B Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao to reply to a question by Konda Surekha of TRS.

But as the din did not subside, the Speaker announced that the House was adjourned to meet again on Monday. This sudden move by the Speaker surprised Minister for Legislative Affairs

T Harish Rao. When asked about it, Rao said it was done on the instructions of the Chief Minister.Normally, whenever there is pandemonium in the House, the Speaker adjourns the assembly for some time to allow the frayed tempers to cool down.

If the situation does not change even after two or three such adjournments, he decides to adjourn the House for the day. This is the first such incident where the assembly has been adjourned for the day within 10 minutes in the Telangana State.

The opposition party leaders like N Uttam Kumar Reddy, K V Vivekananda Goud (TDP) and G Kishen Reddy (BJP) said that this was an unprecedented act and smacks of “arrogance” on the part of the government.

The government which claims that it is ready to reply to any questions has run away when it was confronted by the united opposition. Uttam alleged that the farmers’ suicides were government sponsored murders.

The opposition leaders then went to Telangana Martyrs memorial in front of the Assembly and staged a dharna. All the leaders were taken into preventive custody by the police and were sent to Nampally police station.

TDP leader K V Vivekananda Goud, BJP leader G Kishan Reddy and left party leaders continued dharna in the police station till afternoon.
