Hyderabad: Demanding increase in number of wards in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party legislative floor leader K Lakshman on Friday staged a one-day hunger strike at Dharna Chowk near Indira Park in Hyderabad.

Addressing mediapersons, Lakshman demanded the State government to increase the number of wards from 150 to 200. He said that the State government had submitted affidavit and issued three GOs regarding the division of wards and suddenly took 'U’ turn citing their political benefits.

Fearing a dismal performance in GHMC elections, the government has issued the GO not to divide the existing wards, BJP leader said. The government has been postponing the civic body elections from past one year in a bid to try to improve TRS prospects.

It lacks commitment in holding the municipal polls, he added. The government instead of decentralising the governance has gone back on its decision. He alleged that government has deliberately reorganised the wards in BJP and TDP constituencies.

He said it has changed the boundaries in two wards in the Musheerabad constituency, two wards in Amberpet constituency, two wards in Goshamahal constituency and some other constituencies like Khairatabad and Quthbullapur where the TDPand BJP were strong The TRS government in its bid to help AIMIM in the upcoming election has been adopting such cheap tactics.

How can government reduce the size of constituency only in areas which are strongholds of TDP and BJP ? he questioned. He demanded the government to roll back its decision and increase the number of wards to 200.

He said BJP with the support of Opposition will mount pressure on the GHMC and the government until they increase the number of wards.

Telangana Telugu Desam Party state president L Ramana, former deputy mayor Raj Kumar of Congress party, CPI leader Sudhakar and many others extended support their support to Lakshman and expressed solidarity to his one-day hunger strike.
