Karimnagar: Satavahana University, though established in 2008 is yet to find its feet. The university is still struggling to make a mark. Most of the posts of professors and assistant professors have remained vacant since its inception.

The university has grown steadily as far as adding new buildings. But its performance on academic front can be said to be dismal. There is no recruitment to fill the teaching and non-teaching vacant posts. The sorry state of affairs in the university continues though Minister for Information Technology K Taraka Rama Rao, Finance Minister Eatal Rajender and Chief Whip Koppula Eshawar hail from the district.

According to University Grants Commission’s norms, there should be a professor, two associate professors and four assistant professors in each department. But, norms are observed more in violation. Nine out of 10 posts of professors sanctioned by the government remained unfilled. The university filled 12 teaching posts out of 63 sanctioned. It means that 51 posts are yet to be filled.

Surprisingly, while university is offering 17 postgraduate courses in its three campuses, including its main and LMD campuses and PG centre in Godavarikhani, teaching staff for seven departments such as Telugu, English, Mathematics, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science and Food Science and Technology have yet to be sanctioned by the government. All these subjects are taught by academic consultants.

Even if the government has given its nod to fill all posts in departments like Urdu, Chemistry (organic), Sociology, Physics, Economics, Commerce, Business Management and Pharmacy, university authorities have failed to fill the posts. Similar is the case of non-teaching staff. As against 51 posts sanctioned, only 20 were filled and remaining 31 posts are left vacant. It is felt that the biggest hurdle that is coming in the way of the university authorities from approaching the UGC for 12 (B) certificate is because most of the post remain vacant. There are no internal roads in the main campus.

It is necessary for the university to have all facilities, including teaching and non-teaching staff to secure UGC 12 (B) certificate. Speaking to the Hans India, Assistant Register, Y Kishore said the university was eligible to be accorded 12 (B) status as almost all required facilities, except staff, were provided.

The process of recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff would be taken up once the regular Vice-Chancellor was appointed, he said. Government has recently appointed an IAS officer, Dr B Janardhan Reddy, as in-charge Vice-Chancellor, after the completion of the tenure of regular VC K Veera Reddy.
