Hyderabad: Despite tragic incidents taking place in the play schools due to the managements’ negligence, the government seems to have never bothered about reining in the play schools that have mushroomed across the length and breadth of the city.
Over 1,000 play schools in the city have been running with their own norms, as the State government does not have control over these schools.
In an incident on Tuesday, a four-year-old girl was crushed to death after getting stuck in a lift in the school building. Following the incident, the police have arrested the school principal and a teacher who was present in the lift, under section 304 A of IPC. The District Education Officer has ordered seizure of the school after the incident.
The irony of the story is that the government does not have any control on the play schools. This became an advantage for the managements of play schools to not follow any rules.
According to the rules of Directorate of School Education, schools should not have lifts in the premises, which however do not apply for the play schools.
Hundreds of such play schools functioning in Hyderabad do not have any specific norms and regulations to engage students.
Unaware of the reality, the parents cough up huge amounts to the play schools and hand over their kids’ responsibility to the managements.
Speaking to The Hans India, Hyderabad DEO Somi Reddy said “Play schools do not fall under the Directorate of School Education’s jurisdiction and they do not have any rules of safety to follow. Schools in general are not allowed to maintain lifts, but we cannot stop play schools from having them.”
Answering a query on the incident occurred at Malakpet, the DEO said that two persons including the teacher who was present in the lift were arrested for their negligence and the school has been seized now.
He said that the children in the play school would be admitted to the nearby schools and see that the management pays back the admission fee collected from the children.
