Hyderabad: In an interesting development, thousands of Non Resident Indians (NRIs) across the globe from the Telugu speaking States are flocking Telugu University to learn Telugu. The NRIs in countries like the US and Malaysia are coming forward in huge numbers to learn Telugu certificate course being offered by the university.

In 2013, the university started a four-year certificate course in Telugu language in collaboration with the Silicon Andhra, a Telugu organisation in the United State of America and Telugu People’s Association in Malaysia. In the US, the course is being offered in 25 states through ‘Manabadi’ an organisation under the ambit of Silicon Andhra. While at the time of its launch, the course had an enrollment of 350, now there are over 5,000 candidates pursuing Telugu language course in the US and Malaysia.

The course which is being offered at two levels - junior level and senior level - got recognition in the US schools and two credits are being awarded for it. With successful implementation of the course, now there is a demand from NRIs in countries like Canada, Australia, England, Dubai and Singapore and they are asking the university to offer similar course to them as well.

The university gives only syllabus framework but textbooks required for the course are prepared by the organisations. According to the university officials, the first and third year exams would be conducted by Telugus organisations, second and fourth year exams would be held by the university.

“We prepare the question papers by roping in experts from outside the university. Question papers are sent online to the examination centres. The university sends its invigilators to the exam centres to take care of the exam proceedings. The answer sheets are evaluated there and marks are sent to Hyderabad. Successful candidates will be sent certificates.

By the time they complete the four-year course, their language skills will match to the skills of a student of class X in the State,” said Prof Thomasiah, Registrar, Telugu University. Further, the university also holds convocation in May ever year. So far 1,000 candidates have successfully completed the course.

Meanwhile, the university has announced Visistha Puraskaram Award to noted film director, B Narsing Rao on the occasion its 30th foundation. The award will be presented to Rao along with a cash of Rs 1 lakh, memento and a shawl at a function to be held in the university on Wednesday.
