New Delhi: Deputy Chief Minister Mahmood Ali has advised tolerance and patience on part of everybody in the 'beef festival row' urging "all concerned" not to make an issue out of food practices.

"What one eats is up to the person concerned. Beef, pork, chicken and mutton...these choices need not be public debates or public displays. Osmania University or for that matter any university, school or college, must celebrate knowledge festivals.

Universities are centres of learning and the emphasis and direction should be towards celebrating knowledge and learning processes. “You eat what you have to at home. Let it be confined to your kitchen," Mahmood Ali said in reply to a question here on Wednesday.

Talking to the media along with state government's Special Representative Venugopala Chari, Ali said the controversy being raked up by some sections was unnecessary and unwarranted. Students should put their time on the campuses to good use instead of getting embroiled in such controversies, he added. He said the government was striving hard to improve the standards of education and make it accessible to all minorities.

As part of it, the government was giving post-metric scholarships to all applicants from the minorities. This year the government had received about 1.25 lakh applications out of which 65,000 were for pre-metric scholarships which were dealt with by the Centre. The delegation also urged her to initiate steps to take control of the 'Rubaats' in Saudi Arabia established by the erstwhile Nizam.

Eight of these had been demolished recently and only one was in existence, he said. The cost on Haj pilgrimage would be halved if the Centre takes control of the properties and allows Hyderabadis' to use the facility.

Mahomood Ali said the minister was also urged to take steps to open a Saudi Consulate Office in Hyderabad as it would not only be helpful to a large Muslim population of Hyderabad but would be useful for the entire South Indian Muslims.
