Hyderabad: The MLC polls have come off as an unexpected speed breaker in the way of TRS billboard campaigning strategy for GHMC elections. Nearly 700 of the total 1,500 advertisement hoardings (initially planned by the Greater Hyderabad unit) could not be erected due to Model Code of Conduct at various places in Ranga Reddy district, which is one of the local body constituencies going for the MLC election.

It may be mentioned here that even before the State Election Commission (SEC) issued notification for GHMC elections, the ruling TRS party was going on an overdrive mode, leaving rival parties way behind, as far as campaigning issue was concerned. One can spot huge billboards, at busy junctions and key places, highlighting various flagship schemes of the government with only party president K Chandrashekar Rao and beneficiaries’ pictures on it.

The TRS Greater Hyderabad unit undertook this unique way of campaigning to draw the attention of lakhs of commuters, who travel on city roads every day. According to Greater Hyderabad TRS president Mynampally Hanumantha Rao, the city unit devised plans one-and-half months back, to erect nearly 1,500 such billboards at every nook and cranny of the State capital covering all the 150 divisions that go for GHMC polls shortly. Aasara pensions, 2BHK housing, Kalyanalakshmi, Shaadi Mubarak, supply of power without disruptions, Hyderabad as global city and SHE Teams for security of women were some of the many schemes that were being displayed majorly.

When asked about opposition parties’ objections to misuse of official machinery for GHMC elections, Mynampally said entire cost of Rs 8 crore for erecting billboards was being borne by the Greater unit. Not even a single penny of public money was being diverted for this, he stressed.

Warangal effect on GHMC polls

Meanwhile, TRS functionaries are very upbeat in view of the bumper victory for the party in Warangal by-election. People have given a massive mandate for K Chandrashekar Rao impressed by his governance and various schemes introduced by him in the last 16 months.

The outcome of GHMC elections would be a repeat of Warangal bypoll, he said. “City voters are waiting to teach a fitting lesson to all the opposition parties for targeting the development and welfare-oriented rule of TRS government. Also the argument of TRS, being weak in the State capital will be put to rest after the civic body polls, he felt.
