Hyderabad: Incredible it sounds, but the city has about four lakh stray dogs roaming freely on its streets, according to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). To control the stray dog menace, the corporation is planning to utilise the services of government and private veterinary doctors and pay them for sterilisations.

GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy, after noticing irregularities in the veterinary wing, has decided to seek help from private doctors in order to control the street dog menace. He said about Rs 40 per dog would be paid to doctors for each birth control operation. The civic body is also planning to seek financial assistance from the State Animal Husbandry department in this regard, he added.

Janardhan Reddy further said that the National Animal Board was currently charging around Rs 100 for both birth control operations and anti rabies vaccine and the same would be paid to private doctors by the GHMC. In addition, the doctors would cut the ears of the dog in 'V’ shape, to identify that it has been operated and sterilised upon.

The entire process would take a week and cost about Rs 320, which would be borne by the corporation. There are around 17 vehicles with 102 staff working to control dog menace in twin cities. The same staff would be used to take the dogs to all government and private veterinary hospitals for treatment.

The GHMC Commissioner said that pet dogs maintained by citizens must obtain licence from the civic body for which the he instructed concerned officials to undertake a strict supervision.

Each dog pair reproduces around 4,000 puppies. A pair of dogs (male and female) reproduces around 4,000 puppies in a span of seven years. As per the GHMC records, the corporation has operated around 90,000 dogs in 2014-15 and 60,000 dogs in 2015-16.
