New Delhi: The Telangana government has forwarded a unanimous resolution by the State’s Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council urging the Centre to treat farmers as one unit instead of classifying them under village, mandal or district units under the Agricultural Crop Insurance Scheme.

A delegation of Deputy Chief Ministers K Srihari and Mahmood Ali along with MPs and Ministers P Srinivas Reddy and E Rajender proposed to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard here on Thursday, but were unable to as Modi was in Chennai to take stock of flood situation .

However, the delegation released a memorandum to the PM contained a copy of the resolution, an appeal by P Srinivas Reddy and a copy of the letter of the Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma in this regard. Going by the current practice of considering village, mandal or district as a unit adversely affected the farmers claiming insurance on various grounds, it said. If farmers were considered as a unit, it would be beneficial to them, it stated.
