Hyderabad: Justice MS Ramachandra Rao of the High Court at Hyderabad on Thursday sentenced Karimnagar Municipal Commissioner to 2 months imprisonment after holding him guilty of contempt in a contempt case. The judge however suspended the sentence by 3 weeks to enable the contemnor to avail of his statutory appeal.

KV Ramana Chary is punished at the instance of S Mane emma and two others for failure to implement the directions of the court made on January 13. The petitioners on purchase of property had sought permission of construction of land in Karimnagar.

When the civic authorities refused permission as the land fell under land earmarked for public purpose, they filed the present writ petition. The court had earlier directed, in the writ petition, the civic authorities to acquire the land under land acquisition as the petitioners’ land was taken.

The officer neither paid compensation nor returned the land. The judge found the officer in contempt of court and awarded the imprisonment besides imposing Rs 15,000 as fine.
