Karimnagar: In a shocking revelation, the fact-finding team of Civil Liberties Committee found that the owners of brick kiln units where administering Mala-D, contraceptive pills, to the women workers in guise of anti-inflammatory tablets.
It is learnt that women labourers were given contraceptive pills along with other tablets by kiln operators to prevent them from becoming pregnant. While majority of the migrant workers confirmed that they were forced to swallow tablets, the pills that were found in a unit corroborated their statements.
Speaking to The Hans India, Civil Liberties Committee joint secretary Pulla Sucharitha informed that they found Mala-D tablets at Adeput Venkatesham brick industry located near Ragavapur kiln when they visited the unit to find facts behind the suspicious death of a 17 year-old girl, Sukanti Manji, on October 30.
“We were shocked to see the tablets in the tiny sheds of labourers. When enquired with the labourers, they informed that the supervisor of the unit was administering them when complained about fever and body pains,” she informed.
Sources said the owners of these brick manufacturing units bring women workers from Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Bihar by paying Rs 17,000 for each person to work for a period of ten months. If the women become pregnant, the work would be affected. In order to avoid this situation, the owners were resorting to administering the contraceptive pills to the women either without their consent or by force.
A migrant labour from Odisha, Parvathi, said she was given a tablet when she complained about body pains to a supervisor recently. She was forced to consume the tablet as her husband refused to take her to hospital, she informed.
She further added that henchmen of the owners would beat them up if they refuse to take the pill. The harassment by the owners came to light with the death of four-month-old pregnant woman Surajare in HBT bricks manufacturing unit on Thursday.
Surajare, who hails from Arjunagaon village of Kalahandi in Odisha, was kicked in her stomach by the unit owner Shyam and his henchmen. Based on the complaint by the husband of the deceased woman, Peddaplli police registered a case under section 304 IPC against the owner of the unit Shyam and his henchmen Uday, Antho and Dhanurji.
