Hyderabad: Union government has awarded a unique helpline “112” under the National Emergency Response System (NERS) for the Telangana State in recognition of “distinguished services” rendered by the State police.

The decision was taken by the Centre following the gang-rape in of a student in a moving vehicle in Delhi and Bangalore. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has proposed “112” as unique helpline for the people in distress.

On learning about the effective patrolling system being carried out by the Telangana State police, the Centre has taken the decision to launch the pilot project which envisages establishing a dedicated control room to attend to the calls from the citizens. The system has been designed on the lines of those existing in USA and UK.
