Hyderabad: In a rare case, quadruplets - four girls - were born to a 33-year-old woman Nalini from Tuni in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh at Yashoda Hospitals in Secunderabad on Friday night. All four children weighing 1.2 kg each are healthy, active and doing well, according to doctors.

Nalini’s husband G Chandrasekhar is working as a government teacher. Quadruplets are born one in every seven lakh births. It is one of a very rare birth of four healthy babies in a single delivery. They kept at NICU for close monitoring.

Lots of planning was done to ensure that quadruplets were delivered safely as it was Nalini’s first pregnancy. Normally, quadruplets are either aborted or born as extreme premature babies, the doctors said. According to paediatrician and neonatologist Dr T P Karthik, “Survival of the babies depends on their size as well as maturity. In this case they were delivered after 32 weeks and weigh over one kg each. The outlook is very positive.”

A 15 member team comprising senior obstetricians and gynecologists Dr Bhagya Lakshmi and Dr M Madhavi along with experienced anaesthetist team and paediatricians and neonatology team carried out the surgery.
