Adilabad: Notwithstanding the fact that the conditions are ideal, the Telangana government appears to have put the revival of long-abandoned airstrip in Adilabad on the backburner for now due to fund crunch and other reasons. It may be recalled that the government has decided to establish an airport in Kothagudem as part of its ambitious plan of building greenfield airports in all the districts in the State.

The airstrip in Adilabad, which was established by Hyderabad Nizams some seven decades ago, served as a refuelling station during the World War II. Before it became a full-fledged airbase, Hyderabad State was merged with the Indian Union and no thought was given on its development. Later, the Indian Air Force also used it as a refuelling station until 1970.

In 2014, the Air Force officials, who conducted a survey here, decided to set up an Air Force Training facility. There was also a plan to develop the airstrip into a domestic airport as Adilabad is centrally located.

With the State-run SCCL’s 1,200 MW Jaipur Thermal Power Plant to be operationalised by March 2016 and the government’s proposal to develop an industrial corridor along the NH-44 between Hyderabad and Nagpur in Maharashtra, the air connectivity from here to other places is expected to give a big boost to the industrial growth of the region.

The mining activity, which is concentrated in Jainad and Adilabad mandals, will also attract businessmen to come up with ferroalloy related industries.

In fact, the district administration has identified around 1,100 acres in Khanapur, Anukunta and other suburban villages to meet the requirements of the airport, in addition to the existing 366 acres.

“A detailed report consisting of land, water, road connectivity and other infrastructural facilities has been sent to the State government,” District Collector M Jagan Mohan told The Hans India, stating that as of now he has no information about the latest developments.

When contacted, Adilabad MP of the ruling TRS Godam Nagesh said the process of land procurement was on after the officials concerned were conducted a survey of the airfield a few months ago.

It may be mentioned here that recently the State government has engaged the Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) Limited as its consultancy for undertaking pre-feasibility study for the development of an airport at Kothagudem in Khammam district.
