Minority students feel ditched
As many as 210 students from Telangana, who are seeking admissions into various foreign universities, are eagerly waiting for the scholarships under Chief Minister’s Overseas Study Scheme (CMOSS) promised by the state government.

Hyderabad: As many as 210 students from Telangana, who are seeking admissions into various foreign universities, are eagerly waiting for the scholarships under Chief Minister’s Overseas Study Scheme (CMOSS) promised by the state government. The delay in disbursement of the scholarship is hindering the admission process for them.
“If the government delays the disbursement of scholarships, we will lose the academic year,” an applicant said on the condition of anonymity. Many student like him fear that the admission process may come to end before they receive scholarships. The CMOSS is meant for financial assistance for the minority students who pursue studies away from the country.
The scheme was introduced on May 19 this year and Rs 25 crore was also allocated in the budget. Two hundred ten candidates were shortlisted for the sanctioning of the scholarship out of 513 applications they received. Slow pace of the process left the aspirants in lurch waiting for the disposal of the department for minorities’ welfare. This is revealed in a reply to an RTI application filed by M Srinivas of Hyderabad.
“Even the selected candidates are making rounds to the office in vain. It is not fair on part of the government to keep them on tenterhooks,” said M Srinivas, who filed the RTI application. “The government promised the scholarships for 500 students but they are not even care about the selected,” he added.
The selected applicants will get Rs 10 lakh in two phases. But the slow paced process is making them feel uncertain about their admissions. The Government clarified that Rs 11.76 crore was already sanctioned to the district minority welfare officers (DMWO) and the disbursement was under progress.
