Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma made a presentation on the drought-affected areas to Central team at a meeting held in Haritha Plaza. The Chief Secretary apprised Union Agriculture Joint Secretary Uthpal Kumar Singh and his team of officials who came from Delhi to assess drought conditions in the State.

Rajiv Sharma said that 231 mandals were drought-hit due to low rainfall, reduction in crop yields and perennial drought conditions. A detailed report has already been sent to the Centre, he said.

Though the farmers have sown crops in June following good rainfall, there were no rains in July and August which led to reduction in the yield, he explained.

He also said that they had to press water tankers for providing drinking water to households due to plummeting groundwater table.

He said the government had sought financial assistance under various heads such as Rs 863 crore for agriculture, Rs 102 crore for rural water supply, Rs 86 crore for towns water supply, Rs 134 crore for metro water works, Rs 42 crore for animal husbandry, Rs 369 crore for MGNREGS (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) and RS 917 crore for gratuitous help.

Meanwhile, Telangana Industries Minister Jupally Krishna Rao demanded the Centre to increase the guaranteed number of days of work to 200 under MGNREGS in the drought-affected villages of Mahabubnagar district. He further sought Rs 20,000 per acre compensation to all crops that were hit by famine. The Minister met the Central delegation which toured his native district to assess the extent of damage due to drought this year. He submitted a memorandum in which he made a slew of demands that he felt would contribute in reducing farmers financial losses.

He said that input subsidy should be given at the rate of Rs 5,000 per acre. Jupally sought Rs 150 crore under CRF (Calamity Relief Fund) and Non-CRF to overcome drinking water woes in the district.

Also he sought pension of Rs 1,000 per month to every individual crossing 55 years of age in drought-affected villages.
