New Delhi: Tobacco farmers from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, who gathered here on Tuesday to protest in front of Union Health Minister J P Nadda’s residence were detained for over four hours and released in the afternoon.

A delegation of farmers under the banner of Indian Farmers Federation sought to present a memorandum to the Minister protesting against the pictorial warning on tobacco products as it brought losses to local manufacturers and farmers.

They also said that large scale import of tobacco products from foreign countries resulted in over 25 million kgs of tobacco remaining unsold.

In addition, several NGOs, which were serving the interests of foreign companies, were running a negative campaign against tobacco farmers, they stated.

Seeking a CBI inquiry into the NGOs activities, they said if the government suggested alternate crops, they would not mind shifting over to the same.

They were sowing tobacco only at the suggestion of the Tobacco Board and not on their own and hence it was up to the government to come to their rescue, they said.
