The Democratic Cultural Forum (DCF) of the Osmania University has decided to knock on the doors of the High Court on Wednesday to seek permission for the ‘beef festival’ on the campus on December 10.
Varsity authorities reiterate that no such festival will be allowed on the campus at any cost
Hyderabad: The Democratic Cultural Forum (DCF) of the Osmania University has decided to knock on the doors of the High Court on Wednesday to seek permission for the ‘beef festival’ on the campus on December 10.
The decision by the students comes in the wake of the city civil court on Monday ordering them to maintain status quo on campus. While hearing an appeal by petitioner S Janardhan Goud, the court said organising such festivals on campus was unlawful.
AISF state secretary RN Shankar said they have trust on the High Court that it would give them permission for the festival. “Students have the right to eat whatever they want to. We hope, we will get positive response from the High Court,” he added.
On the other hand, the university authorities once again made it clear that there was no permission to host any festival on the university premises. “It is, therefore, informed to all the concerned including the teachers, students and staff of the university that activities such as beef festival, pork festival, Gau puja etc., which are unrelated to academics and research will not be permitted on the campus,” they said.
The PG practical exams had already commenced on December 7 and the PG theory exams are scheduled to commence from December 14. “Conduct of any non-academic activity would disturb the academic environment and the almanac.
Hence, cooperation of research scholars, students, teaching and non-teaching staff is solicited in maintaining the academic environment and peace in the entire university, in the larger interest of the student community,” the university authorities said. Meanwhile, SC, ST, BC and Minorities Front demanded that the State government release the students who were arrested by the police in connection with the beef festival episode.
Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, front representatives Prof Anwar Khan, Sanaulla Khan, M Kondaswamy, Rasheed Khan Azad and others opined that some section of people were trying to bring a division among the students taking the beef festival issue as an advantage. “It is nothing but an evasion on the unity of Indians. Some section of the people are politicising the beef festival for their selfish motives,” they alleged.
They said that it was atrocious on the part of the government, which was maintaining silence on the provocative speech of Goshamahal MLA Raja Sinh Lodh, to resort to arrests of Osmania University students.
They demanded that the government provide academic atmosphere for the students to pursue education in a free and democratic manner.
“The Osmania University authorities have to establish tolerance, unity and patience on the university premises,” they said.
