Referring to the illicit liquor sales in the remote areas, he pointed out that there were a large number of young widows in some habitations as their husbands died due to excessive consumption of spurious liquor.
He said, “Out of the 1.53 lakh widow pensioners in the district, 60,000 were of young age and majority of them were from areas where the ID (illicitly distilled) liquor menace high. The parents were also not choosing bridegrooms to their daughters from the areas where the liquor business and consumption was high.”
The Collector said that the consumption of liquor would not only harm ones health but also adversely affect the financial situation of the families. Special drives were taken up with the help of women during the last three months and quintals of jiggery which would be used for preparation of ID liquor, was seized, he added. Speaking on the occasion, Superintendent of Police Vikram Jeet Duggal said that 2,500 habitations, where the ID liquor problem exists, were converted into gudumba-free areas during the last three years in the district.
“In all, 1,000 cases were filed and 7,500 individuals were bind over in the cases of ID liquor business,” he said. ICDS Project Director Mothi, DRDA Project Director Ringu Anjaiah and officials of the Excise Department were present.
