Union government officials visit Medak district to assess the magnitude of drought

Sangareddy: Farmers with distress writ large on their faces, dried-up borewells, wilted crops, and barren lands greeted the 3-member Central Committee during their visit to Kangti and Manoor Mandals under Narayankhed constituency on Tuesday. They are the worst drought-affected areas in Medak district.

The team, headed by Maharaj Kumar, an official in the Food Corporation of India, consisted of officials from the Union Ministries of Power and Finance, accompanied by the district officials visited the drought-hit mandals.

They first visited Sardar Thanda, a remote village under Kangti mandal, in the morning and inspected the damaged cotton and red gram crops.

The team then headed to Borgi village where they came across a serpentine queue of people waiting to fill the pots from a single tap. The people complained to the visiting team that they were forced to trek over three km to fetch potable water.

The committee enquired about the availability of water and fodder for cattle during their visit to Gudur village under Manoor mandal. They asked the villagers whether Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme could come to the rescue of people in distress.

The district administration organised a photo exhibition at the District Collectorate for team to assess the magnitude of the drought in the district.

The visiting officials felt that there was a need for taking relief measures. They felt that State required more than Rs 2,431 crore sought by Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma.
