New Delhi: The Chief Justice Bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice, T S Thakur and consisting of Justice R Bhanumati and Justice A K Sikri, stayed the arrest of Ranga Reddy Collector Raghunandan Rao, here on Friday.

The High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad recently ordered the arrest of the Collector in a contempt case for not implementing its order in vacating the unauthorised persons allegedly occupying a housing colony in Qutbullapur's Suraram village in Ranga Reddy district. It may be recalled that petitioners appealed against the Collector in 2007 in the then high court.

The high court which gave notices to the then Collector to restore the properties to original owners ordered arrest of the Collector recently. The Collector was directed to undergo four weeks of imprisonment and Rs 2,000 fine. Senior Counsels Mukul Rohatgi and Harish Salve appeared on behalf of the Collector. The bench also issued notices to the respondents.
