Hyderabad: Former Secretary to Prime Minister K R Venugopal on Saturday said that the eating of beef and pork related to right to food.

Participating in the 125th birth anniversary celebration of Dr B R Ambedkar organised by “Action Aid,” an NGO, here, he referred to the universally accepted definition of food security. He pointed out that Food and Agriculture Organisation’s definition of food security. It was “physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life”

The 1996 World Food Summit adopted the following definition- “food security, at the individual, household, national, regional and global levels [is achieved] when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life,” he explained.

Venugopal said the food preferences were based on social practices and therefore food insecurity existed when people lacked adequate physical, social or economic access to food as defined by the World Food Summit.
