New Delhi: The Supreme Court here on Wednesday issued notices to the Governments of AP and Telangana, seeking their response on the measures to help drought affected farmers, while expressing its serious displeasure at their silence on the same despite the Apex court's earlier notice.

This notice was served on the Centre and nine other States too which include UP, MP, Karnataka, Mahrashtra, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Haryana and Gujarat. Among all these Telangana, AP and Karnataka are the worst affected in which more than 1,500 farmers had committed suicides in the last four months.

It also recalled that more than 400 farmers had committed suicides in Marathwada region of Maharashtra alone. Reminding the State Governments and the Centre that all these States had been asked to furnish a detailed response in the past, it took exception to their silence. Though, the CMs of Maharashtra and MP had declared their States as drought affected, other States like Gujarat, Haryana and Jharkhan had not done so.
