Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has requested the Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu to release funds for development of Hyderabad on a par with A1 cities like Mumbai. Providing Rs 100 crore each year under Smart City category would not help the City develop.

In a letter addressed to the Union Minister, KCR categorically emphasised upon the need for infrastructure development of Hyderabad, which is growing at a fast pace on a par with other major cities of India. He explained that the City which is spread over 625 kilometres should be recognised under A-1 category. Rather considering the City under smart city category, it must be recognised for its growing needs.

While referring to the recommendations made by Economist, Dr Isher Judge Ahluwalia in 2011, Chief Minister stated that the City needs Rs 30,370 crores as investment and Rs 1,264 as maintenance each year. He also pointed out that the City’s drinking water needs and sewerage maintenance needs Rs 15 thousand crores investment. For signal free corridors under Strategic Road Development Project (SRDP), the City needs Rs 20,661 crores. “The City which has Rs 5,500 crore yearly budget would not be able to sustain with mere Rs 100 crore from Central government funding,” he pointed out.

KCR pointed out that half of the City’s population did not have sewerage facility. Most of the drinking water and sewerage facilities laid down decades ago had reached the dilapidated state, which needs to be refurbished by installing new pipelines. “The Central government should come up with new policies for providing basic infrastructural needs for the Cities like Hyderabad. Otherwise it would become tough for the Telangana State to generate the needed revenues,” he added.

According to Ahluwalia Committee Report in 2011, Hyderabad required a whopping Rs 30,370 crore investment for various sectors, including Rs 1,264 crore for maintenance, Rs 15,000 crore for drinking water and drainage management and maintenance, provide better facilities, infrastructure and connectivity, he said.
