Hyderabad: Abdul Basith, a 20-year-old engineering dropout from Chandrayangutta had developed ample contacts with fighters of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), who guided him and his cousins to join the terror group.

Basith, a brilliant student from childhood, was rusticated from the engineering college for his mischievous behaviour. Later, he was forced to stop his Interior decoration course at a private institute in Himayathnagar by his parents.

Basith, the eldest son of his parents, reportedly had a tough childhood. His much disciplined father used to beat him over petty issues, according to the locals.

Syed, a neighbour of Basith, told The Hans India that Basith used to teach mathematics to his juniors and neighbours for free and he was considered as a genius. “At times, Basith also used to scold us if we did any mischievous things. He used to teach us how to behave properly and always helped us in education,” said Syed.

Syed said after the police detained Basith for the first time, it had become even tougher for him. He was provided ordinary cell phone and his father put him under restrictions and ordered him to return home by 9 pm.

According to highly placed sources, Basith actively participated in protests against Gaza attacks in 2014. He commented aggressively on sensitive posts on social media. That was when he went under intelligence radar, sources said.

On continuous tracking, the Intelligence officials found that Basith became friend with one Andul Aziz Andaluzi, a sniper in Syria. The duo on July 27, 2014, had a video chat on Skype. The sniper told Basith to join forces in Syria if he had capability to fight for a reason, and that was the last time the duo conversed.

Later, he met one Abu Zakria, a self-claimed leader of ISIS hailing from Hatay in Turkish province located in Syria-Turkey border, who encouraged Basith to join ISIS fighters, saying that it would be the safest place for him and his family.

When Basith failed to raise funds to go to Syira, Zakria assured help and asked him to contact one Anand Gowda, a converted Muslim hailing from South India, who had promised Rs 1.5 lakh for travel expenses to Basith.

In the last week of August 2014, the police learnt about the youngster’s plans and seized his passport. Learning this, Zakria told Basith to contact his associates at Surat and Karimnagar. The trio had a Skype video chat and from there, Basith was guided to take the Bangladesh route to reach Syria via Turkey.

The Intelligence officials by then had received tip-off and detained Basith, Maaz Hussain, Noman and Abrar from a lodge in Kolkata. The youngsters were all counselled in the presence of their parents and let free.

The counselling by police could not help Basith come out of the dragnet of anti-social ideology and he again attempted to leave for Syira. But the police averted it by arresting him in Nagpur, before boarding a flight to Srinagar, from where he and his two friends Maaz and Omer Farooqui planned to go to Syria via Turkey.
