Adilabad: Come summer, the demand for Adilabad ‘ranjans’– claypots–will go up from the poorer sections of society who cannot afford a refrigerator. The pots acquire special cooling properties because of the use of red soil in their making. Then they are baked in specially-made kilns. The soil is obtained from some designated tank beds. Because of their special cooling effect, they are often described as refrigerators of the poor.

Talking to The Hans India, potter Rajamma said each ranjan is being sold at Rs 50. The ranjans are made in different sizes – big and small – fitting them with taps. Small pots are useful for the singles. The ranjans are being exported to all parts of Telangana and also to neighboring Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. First the red soil must be procured to make the pitchers.

The potters are purchasing the soil as they are not being allowed to gather soil from tank beds. To bake the pots, the potters have to construct a kiln. They incur an expenditure of Rs 6,000 on firewood to bake the pots. The potters lament that the vocation of making pots is not at all remunerative for them since they have to undergo many travails right from making them to disposing of them in the market.

They say they incur an expenditure of Rs 30,000 in making the ranjans, but not getting returns on their investment. But the middlemen are buying the ranjans for Rs 50 each and disposing them in the market for Rs 100 each. One of the makers of pitchers Sattemma appeals to the government for support to enable them to continue their hereditary vocation. The people have taken a fancy for Adilabad brand ranjans.

Keeping in mind the demand for the brand, some unscrupulous people are churning out fake ranjans to the detriment of potters who make the Adilabad brand ranjans. Apprehending loss of market because of the fake products, the real potters are appealing to the government to extend them loans to sustain their operations
