Hyderabad: Florists are making a killing as the nerve centre for flowers in Telangana, the Gudimalkapur flower market, is in full bloom, thanks to the wedding season. With no muhurtams, the auspicious time for performing a marriage, being available till August 2017 post April, a whopping 29,000 marriages are slated to be performed.

All these marriages are scheduled to take place on April 24, 27 and 29. S Subhash Reddy, president, Hyderabad Wholesale Flower Market Association, said the prices of jasmine, gerbera and marigold have gone up by 50 percent to 75 percent in the last four days.

Flower vendors are cashing in on the demand and jacked up the prices. The vendors are very much aware of that there would be no muhurtams after April till 2017 in view of Krishna Pushkaralu. Marigold that was sold for Rs 20 a kg has shot up to Rs 80 and the most sought after gerbera that comes in red, white, yellow, pink and orange have gone beyond the reach of common people.

Arvind, a resident of Mud Fort, had a shock when he visited Jambagh market. He said, “Just last month I bought a bunch of gerbera for Rs 25 and now a bunch of 10 flowers cost Rs 125.

With no choice left, people are purchasing flowers as they form an integral part of a wedding. Price of jasmine another flower that is a must in all marriages too has shot up from Rs 60 a kg to Rs 150 a kg. Rehmat, a flower vendor said, “The supply remains the same but the demand during wedding days is huge. One cannot but increase the prices.”

Suresh Reddy, who grows gerbera in a poly house on the outskirts of Hyderabad, said, “We also time the cutting of the flowers with the muhurtams. Gerbera is sought after as they are stately and come in so many colours. It is a favourite flower for decorators.”

In a span of four days, the flower business in Gudimalkapur market would touch Rs 50 lakh to Rs 80 lakh, said Subhash Reddy. About 50 shops sell at least 500 kg of marigold, 100 kg of jasmine and about 25 shops sell 100 boxes of gerbera a day. Each box of gerbera contains 40 bunches and each bunch comprises 10 flowers.
