Khammam: If you have not visited Khammam city for a while, then you are in for a bit of surprise finding the increasing attention paid to the aesthetics of the roads and the traffic management. Thanks to the Municipal Corporation for its endeavour, the city was aptly adjudged ‘Best Municipality’ in the State on the second anniversary of Telangana Formation Day.

City aims at all-round development

However, there is a lot still remains to be done, the noticeable change that Khammam city underwent in the recent past instils confidence among the denizens while raising their hopes of development which they agonisingly missed for the last few years. It may be mentioned here that it’s been three years since the Khammam municipality was upgraded into the Corporation, but the denizens are yet to taste the fruits of it.

Moreover, the Corporation has been grappling with a severe staff crunch. With no elected body until recently, the development of the city remained stagnant. After the upgradation, the first ever election to the Corporation was held in this March. Against this backdrop, the Corporation worked its way to beautify the city taking up various measures such as installation of 450 LED street lights, developing junctions and constructing road dividers besides taking up plantation along the roads.

“To improve the aesthetics of the city, the civic authority took up a wall painting project. About 50,000 square feet wall painting has been done,” Municipal Commissioner G Venugopal Reddy told The Hans India. This apart, the fountain square at the Yellandu crossroads has added more colour to the city’s beautification, he said.

Referring to the ‘Best Municipality award given by the government to the Khammam on Thursday, Mayor Dr Guguloth Papalal said: “The award has increased our responsibility. A DPR is being prepared for the installation of underground drainage in the city. We will also strive for the Smart City tag for the city by improving amenities.”

A pilot project of solar street lighting is also on the anvil, the Mayor said, referring to their plans. According to a plan chalked out by the civic authorities, Khammam will be made into an open defecation-free city by June 2, 2017 besides addressing drinking water crisis totally by June 2, 2018.
