Khammam: Neither there was a faction feud nor an election rally, but Medepalli, a village which has won several prestigious awards like the Google.org Gram Panchayat Puraskar and Nirmal Gram Puraskar, was tense on Sunday with a large number of people screaming and running all
over the place with long sticks in hand.

With the monkey menace reaching mega proportions in this reputed village in Mudigonda mandal for the last few months, over 500 villagers armed with sticks roamed all over the village and nearby fields chasing away the monkeys. The menace has become so serious that no household in the village could get away with the problem as the simians kept sneaking in to their houses and decamping with fruits, vegetables and other eatables.

This apart, the monkeys are also causing extensive damage to the agriculture fields. The farmers, who are already suffering from low yield due to famine conditions in the region, have to confront the monkey menace to save their crops. The farmers have taken several measures to prevent monkeys invading the guava gardens, maize and other crops around the village, which have become a heaven for these four-legged foes.

They also tried out monkey-catchers, an expensive one and firecrackers to drive away them. Knowing that the presence of a langur could create a scare among the monkeys, they even hired them but in vain. Against this backdrop a couple of days ago, the villagers known for their cooperative spirit decided to congregate on Sunday to drive away the monkeys from their vicinity.

Explaining their ordeal to The Hans India, Vallala Narender said “It became imminent for us to do something new to prevent the monkey plundering our homes and fields. So the elders of the village decided to gather in large numbers with sticks to drive away the monkeys. We engaged a few tractors to move around the village in groups between 9 am to afternoon and drove away around 300 monkeys.” Despite the effort, there are 30 to 40 monkeys lurking in the village, he added.
