Hyderabad: The government’s target is to plant 40 crore saplings this year in the State, said Forest Minister Jogu Ramanna. Participating in a programme on ‘Haritha Haram’ here on Friday, a major initiative of the government which entails expanding the green cover in the State from the existing 23 per cent to 36 per cent, the Minister said they were encouraging plantation programmes at different levels on a massive scale.

The government had already begun the plantation drive, said the Minister and called upon the people to get involved and make it a huge success. Pointing out the many advantages of improving the green cover in the State such as reduction in pollution, a better environment and more rainfall, Ramanna said the TRS government under the able leadership of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had a vision to promote the greenery in Telangana, which in turn would yield more rains.

The Minister said the target was to plant 40 crore saplings this year and a total of 230 crore saplings over the next three years. He said 40,000 saplings would be distributed to every village and 40 lakh saplings to each Assembly constituency as part of the plantation drive. It was also decided by the government to encourage each farmer to plant 100 saplings at least and get Rs 5 per plant towards maintenance, added the Minister.
