Hyderabad: A decade-old plan, conceived by Y S Rajasekhar Reddy in the undivided Andhra Pradesh to connect all important junctions in Greater Hyderabad with ORR (Outer Ring Road) through radial roads, has got the Telangana State government’s nod.

Under the project, the then government proposed to establish nearly 30 radial roads by roping in HMDA (Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority), GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) and State Roads and Buildings Department.

While, the GHMC and R&B department threw up its hands to take up the project citing financial crisis, HMDA had come forward to execute seven road laying works on different stretches with the help from JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).

“Telangana government earmarked Rs 350 crore in 2016-17 for radial road work. This year the works would be taken up on seven stretches,” an official said.

The basic objective of developing radial roads is to connect all busy junctions in the city directly with ORR so that people can avoid congested roads during their travel to outside the city.

The roads to be connected are Panjagutta to Edulanagulapalle (covering 7 km), Hyderabad Central University to Vattinagulapalle (14 km), Nizampet crossroads to Kazipalle (9 km), Nanalnagar junction to Central University depot (15.5 km), Nagole bridge to Singaram ( 14 km) and Nagole bridge to Gourelli connecting 14-km stretch would be developed as radial roads.

Most of the radial roads passing through the busy areas in the city would be widened as 6-lane roads. The existing roads would be widened by 30 metres depending on the availability of land. HMDA has been given responsibility to acquire lands and the R&B department would pay compensation.
