After retiring from the Treasury Department in 2000, 74-year-old Kondaji Brahmaiah devoted his full time to raising plants.
A resident of Andhra Colony in Utukur village of Luxettipet mandal, he raised a garden in his land of 35 kuntas to curb environmental pollution. The lush green surroundings of his house reflect his dedication to promote greenery.
The garden contains a wide variety of flowers, herbs, vegetables, fruits and other plant species. He used to experiment in plant grafting to develop new varieties. He spends about Rs 5,000 per month on maintenance of the garden.
The health secret of the septuagenarian is balanced diet, who takes food for lunch and fruits for supper. He also does Yoga. He spends most of his time in the garden by attending to plants. He does not hesitate to consult the agricultural officials if the plants are affected by diseases. A small Hanuman Mandir was also constructed in the garden, where he recites Hanuman Chalisa.
Speaking to The Hans India, Brahmaiah said ‘Environmental protection is set to be a major challenge in the coming days. There is every need to promote greenery in a big way to curb pollution.
The indiscriminate felling of trees on the pretext of urbanisation and industrialisation should be curbed. Social forestry should be taken up as a mass movement.
It is the responsibility of everyone to raise plants, which helps protect the planet earth from global warming.’
Congratulating the Haritha Haram Award recipient, Luxettipet Forest Officer Anitha appealed the people of the mandal to raise plants by getting inspiration from Brahmaiah.
Conservator of Forests Thimma Reddy and Mancherial DFO D Prabhakar visited the garden of Brahmaiah at Andhra Colony in Utukur village on Thursday.
Speaking after inspecting his garden, Thimma Reddy lauded the endeavour of Brahmaiah to promote greenery. People of Adilabad should take up plantation of saplings in a big way by taking the Haritha Haram Award winner as their role model.
The involvement of people is essential for the success of Haritha Haram campaign aimed at increasing the green cover in Telangana, he said.
