Drive to enrol more students in government degree colleges
Warangal: In a bid to tackle well-heeled campaign by private degree colleges, faculty members at government colleges in Warangal district are launching different initiatives encouraging students to join state-run colleges.
Taking the onus of increasing enrolments in government degree colleges under Kakatiya University limits, teaching staff of the colleges are conducting campaigning to attract and educate students on the benefits of joining government institutions.
Here a multi-pronged approach is being adopted by the colleges. The colleges are distributing pamphlets, organising awareness programmes at junior colleges and in villages, besides newspaper statements to motivate students to get admissions in government colleges.
Lending their part Telangana Government College Gazetted Teachers Association (GCGTA) leaders are also doing their part in the campaigning. “Well qualified, experienced and committed faculty is available only at government colleges and students can benefit from their services.
With this message we going to the students” said the association state general secretary NVN Chary. The association members in Khammam and Adilabad are also engaged in the task in their districts.
In addition, all the colleges are well-equipped in terms of libraries, labs, accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and promoting NCC and NSS activities. For example Kakatiya Government Degree College in Hanamkonda is accredited with NAAC ‘A’ grade. The college is conducting free coaching classes for PG entrances along with career guidance, he added.
“We are visiting nearby junior colleges asking teachers there to send their students to our college besides reaching out to the students in the city and villages” said Vasireddy Krishna Rao, Telugu lecturer at Pingili Government College for Women situated at Waddepally in Hanamkonda.
Pamphlets are being distributed and awareness programmes are being conducted. This year the college is offering a new course, B Com (computer applications). Since online admission system is introduced this year the faculty members are also explaining the students how to apply for admission.
“The response from the students is positive. Moreover, a new trend towards arts, science and commerce courses is being witnessed among the students instead of opting for engineering” Krishna Rao told The Hans India.
The number of admissions in government degree colleges under KU is around 70, 000 during last year. This year it is expected that the number of admissions will cross 90, 000 and can touch one lakh mark, he hoped.
He informed a New Residential Government Women’s Degree is set to start functioning at Madikonda on the outskirts of Kazipet with BA, B Com and B Sc courses. The admissions are being looked after by Pingili College.
