Wanaparthy (Mahabubnagar): The ‘Bangla’ Krishnadevaraya Polytechnic then known as Ramsagar Palace was a part of the most important Princely State of Wanaparthy dating back to 1885 when Rani Shankaramma built it. The Wanaparthy Samsthanam has a unique importance as its history is about 500 years old.

The material required for the polytechnic building was secured from Calcutta and Hyderabad. It resembled beautiful structures in these cities while being built by Rani Shankaramma. The tank on the Bangla premises, the work of which was taken up earlier, used to meet the drinking needs of local population. The then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the first and biggest polytechnic college in the region spread over 100 acres.

This Bangla with years of history is on the verge of collapse. The tank has become disused with visitors and residents throwing rubbish and waste in to it. Intellectuals of Wanaparthy including Rajaram Prakash, a teacher and student leader Vishnu want the government to take the initiative to make the college building a tourist centre. They expressed anguish that the building is illuminated only on the Telangana Formation Day once a year.

The Wanaparthy Samsthanam was founded under the stewardship of Veera Venkata Krishna Reddy. He had ably served the cause of literature and workers. Reddy set up infrastructure for printing the workings of local poets and writers. The Wanaparthy rulers had the rare distinction of honouring the eminent poet Tirupati Venkata Kavulu.

They also built temples. Krishnadevaraya, the husband of Rani Shankaramma, was an able ruler. Their elder son Krishnadeva Rao who also ruled died young because of an ailment paving way for the younger son Raja Rameswar Rao to take over.

It was during his stewardship that the Wanaparthy Samsthanam was merged in the Indian Union. Rao went on to become the first MP to get elected and was made a Union minister. He became MP thrice and was close to the then prime minister Nehru. Because of this proximity, Rao handed over to the government his property worth crores of rupees.
