Hyderabad: Scrap has become the biggest fund raiser and source of continuous funds to city-based charity group Safa Baitul Maal. It raises more funds through this exercise than other forms of donation for the purpose of providing succour to destitutes across the country.

The scrap collecting campaign, which was started by the Educational Welfare and Charitable Trust about few years back, has now become a full-fledged operation which runs throughout the year. Individuals who believe in charity dispose of old furniture, clothing and other items by directly contacting the trust’s office based in Old Malakpet.

The vehicles collecting scrap have a monitoring system and are tracked through GPS to ensure that all items reach the godown in Shastripuram safely, before being disposed off through a process of auctioneering which is tightly monitored by senior staffers. For efficient delivery, the tracking system monitors the vehicle movement to ensure that all items are delivered in time and intact.

Call centre
During the day, several staff members are busy attending to calls from donors at the call centres. They note the addresses of the good Samaritans, who respond through newspaper advertisement. The staffers immediately contact the vehicle which is close to the location by identifying it with the help of a tracking device. The scrap is collected by a trained field worker engaged for this particular purpose, who hands over an invoice with the details of items offered by the donor.

“On an average we make out Rs 8 lakh per month through collection of scrap and sometimes it crosses all other categories of collection. The funds so collected are mostly availed of for the administrative purposes and salaries, besides serving for the purpose of charity, because of the constraints in availing Sadaqa and Zakat funds,” said M A Muqtadir Imran, in-charge of branches.

About 10 vehicles leave daily for collecting scrap from the donors. The bundles or packages collected are weighed at the Shastripuram godown. It is sorted out at a godown in two major categories, the scrap meant for recycling is piled up there and the remaining items sent to different godown.
The items which are reusable is given code number and preserved for auctioning. These are sent to a separate godown.

Interestingly, the reusable items sometimes are utilised for a particular purpose, as per the wish of donor. “Sometimes, the donors ask us to use a particular product for marriage of poor girl or as gift to her,” said the incharge. With the success of this mechanism in the city, the management of Safa Baitul Maal plans to extending this to its other branches in major cities and towns spread across 10 states.
