Hyderabad: With just two elevators functioning out of the 18 spread in different blocks of the Gandhi Hospital, the patients, their family members and hospital staff are getting into a battle mode trying to squeeze in. Though the capacity of the lift is 24, close to 30 people enter it.

There are times when patients have to wait for more than 20 minutes for a lift. Many a time patients need to switch from one floor to another for medical tests. Raghu, a patient said, “Cardiology and nephrology departments are on the fifth floor which makes it difficult for patients, especially aged people.”

It may be noted that last year Health Minister C Laxma Reddy visited the hospital and had given assurance for replacing the elevators. Dr J V Reddy, Superintendent, Gandhi Hospital said that the two lifts were installed 11 months back and a third one has been sanctioned. Once the additional floors on the emergency block are complete, more lifts would be installed.
