Hyderabad: At a time when the State faced severe drought conditions, over one lakh livestock benefitted from the ‘cattle rehabilitation camps’ organised by the State government in two drought-affected districts Medak and Mahbubnagar.

The ‘cattle camps’ which were organised after more than a decade (last time 2003) proved to be effective in providing succour to farmers depending on livestock.

The animal husbandry department spent Rs 210 lakh in three mandals (of Mahbubnagar district and 108 lakh in Medak district’s Kaleru village (Sultanabad mandal) for this purpose alone.

A total of 300 metric tonnes of fodder silage bales were supplied in Mahbubnagar and 185 metric tonnes in Medak. Total 71,538 animals benefitted in Mahbubnagar and 36,415 animals in Medak. “We organised cattle camps to avert death of livestock, because collectors in these two districts insisted upon the same,” informed an official.

According to officials of animal husbandry, besides camps for animals, drought feed worth Rs 7.52 crore was supplied to seven drought-affected districts in Telangana. The department has chosen 500 animals per mandal on an average with the farmer cattle ratio of 1:2.

Each animal was provided with 100 kg of feed in 231 drought-affected mandals in seven districts. These cattle camps were launched by the government in the last week of April after it was observed that distressed farmers were selling away their livestock, owing to severe drought conditions and scarcity of water.

The government also provided all necessary arrangements at the camp like collection of milk from the cattle. The dairy department collected the milk and paid farmers on a daily basis.

Given the severity of the situation, the State government’s drought relief is also being extended to ‘cattle camps’ for the first time. Proposals were sent by the animal husbandry department to revenue (disaster management wing).

“As per the SDRF (State Disaster Relieve Fund) guidelines, we formally fund after taking into account the criteria mentioned in it. The file is under the circulation for administrative sanction,” said special commissioner for disaster management Sada Bhargavi.
