Sangareddy jail shows way to go green
The Director-General of Police (Prisons) V K Singh recently said that the plan is to plant three lakh teakwood plants in jails which would not only have ecological benefits but would also provide income to the prisoners as well as the jails.
In just one-and-a-half years, the district jail authorities have planted 10,000 teakwood plants
Hyderabad/Sangareddy: The Director-General of Police (Prisons) V K Singh recently said that the plan is to plant three lakh teakwood plants in jails which would not only have ecological benefits but would also provide income to the prisoners as well as the jails.
The ambitious plan may well turn into reality going by the way in which the initiative has begun. In just 0ne-and-a-half years, 10,000 teakwood were planted at the Sangareddy district jail at Kandi village which have grown to a considerable height, some as tall as 12 feet.
The jail authorities have used most of the land for plantation. 26 acres of the total 39.94 acres of the district jail is used for tree plantation making it one of the greenest jails in the region. Santosh Kumar Roy, Jail Superintendent, says, “Apart from teak, 2,500 mango, 200 subabul, 300 all neredu and 300 chinna badam too have been planted.”
The prisoners, about 15 of them take turns and look after the nursery that includes 20 varieties of Euphorbia Milly, Crotons, Lilly, Jasmine and Golden Dorantha. Santosh Kumar Roy says, “Many prisoners show eagerness to take care of the nursery. We have noticed a positive behavioural change. Nature can soothe the soul and it is showing.”
What makes the jail different from other jails is a major part of the land is used for the nursery and plantation. The main jail building and barracks occupy just 13.94 acres and the rest of 39.94 acres is left for greenery. Santosh Kumar Roy says, “The idea is to create a conducive environment for social reformation and rehabilitation and at the same time make a difference to the environment.”
