Karimnagar: Never heard of a government school having a school bus! It’s for real! Perhaps for the first time in history a government school fortunate to be bestowed with a bus in a proactive move towards increasing the student enrolment.

Finally, the century-old Kamalapur Zilla Parishad High School established in 1911, like any other school has lost student patronage over the years especially after the advent of private institutions.

The school, which has given an eminent journalist like S Venkatanarayana, former senior editor at India Today magazine, was in shambles until recently when Minister for Finance E Rajender, who incidentally had his schooling from this very school, took up the initiative of elevating it to the level of e-techno school.

At a time when the people of drought-stricken rural areas are a worried lot sending their wards to schools due to their inability to bear the transportation expenses, the 41-seater school bus has come like a gift from heaven. This initiative is expected to give the private school managements a run for their money and stop the dwindling patronage to government schools.

As of now, construction of a new building is being taken up with an outlay of Rs 1.80 crore. The school will have facilities like online teaching with a projector in every classroom, solar power and a lab each for all subjects. The school will also get dual desk benches as part of Indian Oil Corporation’s gesture to 11 schools in the region.

Speaking to The Hans India, the headmaster B Ram Reddy said “The people in Desharajupalle, Shambhunipalle, Kanparthi, Vangapalli and Pangidipalli poured out their problem when our staff went on an enrolment drive.

The parents said that neither they were able to send their wards to private schools as the expenses are out of their reach nor to Kamalapur ZP school as there was no provision of bus convenience. Following this, the minister provided a school bus costing Rs 16.38 lakh for the students to commute free of cost.”

The maintenance expenses of the school bus will be met by the interest amount of Rs 10 lakh fixed deposit which the minister will provide, he said, hoping a good student patronage after this move.

Finance Minister, who inaugurated the school bus on Monday, said “The aim of the government is to create conducive atmosphere for the students to achieve success in their academics and bring accolades to the nation. Every penny spent on education is an investment for the future of the country”.
