Devarakadra (Mahabubnagar): Residents of Gopanpalli village left their homes under lock and key and spent the whole day on Sunday in the fields to appease the Rain Gods. Encouraged by initial showers, the farmers commenced agriculture operations and sowed seeds of various crops.
As rains played truant afterwards, they are in a quandary whether the seeds sown would germinate at all?

The people of the village firmly believed that rains used to occur regularly as they used to spend one day in the gardens (vana vasam) in a year.
This time, they chose to observe ‘Varuna Vasam’ leaving the village and spending the good part of the day in their fields. As part of observing it, the villagers cooked food in their fields and returned homes after dusk (around 6 pm).

The young and old, women and children enjoyed the outing. The children played games, danced and played on swings. Women decorated the fields with Boddemmas (flowers pots). A villager Dasaradha, farmer Guruvayya and housewives Radha and Nagamma prayed to the ‘Rain God’ for sumptuous rains and hoped that they would be impressed by their ‘Varuna Vasam’ will bring rains for all-round prosperity. While the villagers were camping in their fields, some of the residents performed guard duty denying at the village, sending away all strangers.
