Nizamabad: Heavy rains lashed the town on Tuesday with canals, streams and rivulets overflowing. Several streets in the localities were inundated and the incessant rains brought cheers to the farmers, especially during the Kharif season, who were till now spending anxious moments due to the prevailing drought and the deficit rainfall.

They were also worried over the depleting ground water resources and drying up of bore wells. For the first time, the ground water level fell by 12 meters while at some places it fell by 30 to 40 meters.

It is after two years that the district received bountiful rainfall over the last fortnight in the surrounding towns and villages. There is no water even in the hand pumps.

Drought was staring in the face of the farmers. All that has changed with the incessant rainfall which filled up the ponds.The digging of rainwater harvesting pits has yielded positive results in collecting and saving rain water.
