Govindaraopet (Warangal): The farmers under the ayacut of Gundlavagu irrigation project near Karlapalli village of Govindaraopet Mandal are a happy lot as the reservoir received abundant waters due to recent rains.

The projects’ full reservoir level (full tank level-FTL) is 26 feet and the current water level is 24 feet. The villagers are hoping that the water could cater to the irrigation needs of both kharif and rabi under the ayacut.

The project aims to irrigate 4,500 acres of land at tribal hamlets in Govindaraopet, Tadvai and surrounding mandals. As the project’s catchment area is spread amid hillocks in the forests of the above mandals, it receives good inflows even if there are moderate rains.

The farmers, who are feeling happy at the project receiving water near to its FTL, are also apprehensive in view of their past experiences. It might be recalled that the project was washed away on August 4, 2006 due to floods in that year.

Again in June 2015, the bund of the project developed a fissure at ground level leading to seepage of water allegedly due to poor quality construction works and due to lack of foolproof revetment of the embankment. The soil used to construct the bund was extracted locally and it is fully of gravel making the bund weak.

The stones collected in the rivulet and local forests have been arranged on the inner side of the bund making it volatile, the villagers alleged.
