Hyderabad: Open manholes and uncovered storm water drains are posing a serious threat to residents and commuters alike along the battered bumpy Srinagar Colony main road. The travails of residents have only increased in the recent months.

For the past several months the road was dug up by officials to lay a major drinking water pipeline. Later, it was left unattended, forcing MAUD minister K T Rama Rao to intervene and direct officials to restore normalcy.

Though officials in their eagerness to please the minister used heavy machinery to fill up the dug-up road, they ended up damaging the storm water channel on the busy stretch posing grave threat to children using the road.

The storm water drain line is located along the Srinagar Colony main road towards Sri Satya Sai Nigamagamam. A 2X2 ft portion of cement slab has crumbled here exposing the weak iron skeletal remains on the storm water drain.

A nearby flower vendor Ramesh Kumar said that several pedestrians have had rough falls here over the past 15 days whenever there is water logging, as the broken portion gets submerged in the flowing rain water.

"Even two-wheeler users face a severe problem here while proceeding from Aurora Colony on to Srinagar Colony Road as it is just on the street corner," he said.

Similarly, an open manhole in front of Vividha Vantakam restaurant that is 100 m away from the collapsed storm water drain is also exposing residents to imminent danger. Residents here said that the cover was broken during the pipeline and road repair works that were carried out over the past four months.

A frequent visitor to restaurant S Kiran Kumar, a techie by profession, said that whenever there is water stagnation on the road, the manhole is not visible. The software engineer said, “Any new person using this stretch will surely end up in the open manhole even in the dark," he said.

The maintenance staff at the restaurant said that they have been regularly requesting sanitary workers to cover the manhole, but are yet to get a positive response from GHMC officials.

Madhumitha P, a teacher in a private school who resides 100 m away from the open manhole, said that there is an urgent need to fix the manhole and make Srinagar Colony road more pedestrian friendly.
