True to Mahatma’s words ‘Humanity is greater than religion’

Warangal: The heart-rending story of a Hindu elderly person, who was ignored by his son in his last days reportedly due to a conflict of the religion they currently follow, culminated on a pathetic note.

But the instance has once again proved that humanity is bigger than any religion when Yakubee, wife of Sahrudaya Old-age Home president Md Chotu, came forward to perform the last rites of 75-year-old Keerti Srinivas, a tailor who belonged to Station Ghanpur, here on Wednesday.

It’s learnt that Srinivas was ignored by his son Sharath for the last few years as he objected to his son’s proposal of converting to Christianity. However, Sharath went on with his decision and converted to Christianity. The rift widened between the father and son, forcing Srinivas to live separately and away from his son.

He worked in a tailor shop near Old Bus Depot area in Hanamkonda to eke out a livelihood. Against this backdrop, he suffered paralysis a couple of years ago and made a living by alms-seeking for some time before he was admitted to Sahrudaya Old-age Home near NIT.

After he breathed his last on Wednesday morning, the management of the old-age home informed his son about his father’s death. Sharath who turned up at the old-age home refused to perform the last rites of his father citing that his religion didn’t allow him to do so.

Though his relatives and friends urged him to perform the rituals for his father as prescribed by Christianity, Sharath was adamant and refused to touch his father’s body.

Following this, Yakubee came forward to perform the rituals reminding the people the words of Mahatma Gandhi that “there is no religion higher than truth and righteousness”. She performed the last rites at Siva Mukti Dhamam graveyard near Padmakshi temple.

Speaking to The Hans India, Sahrudaya president Chotu said “Humanity is greater than any other thing in this world. Me or my wife believe in humanity.”
