Nalgonda: Industrial revolution led to advances in agricultural technology that has greatly increased the yield in the country. But at the same time, it minimized the use of farm animals, like cows, oxen etc. Also the increasing cost of fodder made the farmers consider the cattle as heavy burden.

This caused the oxen to slowly disappear from agriculture, which once played an important role in ploughing and other farm-related works.

The introduction of machines for ploughing, sowing, removing weeds, cutting etc has made it easy for the farmers. The work could be completed in less time and with less manual labour.

On the other hand, the government is giving tractors and other agriculture related machinery at subsidised price to farmers to make farming a profitable sector.

According to farmers, the cost of a perfect pair of oxen is about Rs 80,000 in the present market and they require a lot of care afterwards.

It is becoming a herculean task for them to feed the cattle during drought. The cost of hired tractors is less than the maintenance cost of oxen. Ultimately during the course of time the conventional method of oxen farming is slowly replacing with mechanical farming.

A farmer from Perika Kondaram of Shaligouraram mandal, Venkanna, felt that the farmers also should change their methods of farming in tune with the changing times.
