Khammam: For a change the auto rickshaw drivers in Khammam city, taking time off from their routines on Sunday organised a rally in support of Haritha Haram, the flagship programme of the state government to improve the greenery. Though people from all walks of life are patronising the plantation drive, perhaps this is the first time in Telangana the auto drivers too have joined the programme.

Thanks to the recent initiatives taken by the traffic police whose campaigns like Safe Drive’ and Helmet Awareness have brought a noticeable change in the city which hitherto has been in chaos. This time they came up with another programme buttressing the state government’s plantation drive in the city.

With their auto-rickshaws decked up with green flags and Haritha Haram stickers, nearly 500 drivers lined up at the Pavilion Grounds to propagate for the cause of environment. Seeing them in high spirits, Minister for Roads and Buildings Tummala Nageswara Rao, who was here to flag off the rally, commended the efforts of the auto drivers and the traffic police. The minister had a word of praise especially for Traffic DSP Suresh Kumar and Circle Inspector P Naresh Reddy for motivating the auto drivers.

The Minister, on the occasion, said “It was heartening and awe-inspiring to see the auto drivers spending their valuable time for the cause of the society.” The drivers’ gesture will definitely inspire the others to go for the green drive thereby supporting the eco-system. “Each driver was given three saplings to plant on the premises of their residences,” CI Naresh Reddy thanked the auto drivers for coming up voluntarily and supporting the green campaign.
